Members stories of their horse holidays

Joanne and Big Dave enjoy their holiday

"We have always wanted to go trekking and this year we took the plunge. Our horses settled quickly into their new home, a lush green field with fresh water and trees for shelter. We lunched out on the patio of our holiday cottage then saddled up to go on our first trek. Our guide took us up onto the hills and for 3 days we trekked, through knee deep heather, over the common, through herds of ponies and grazing cattle. We rode through the forests and picnicked by streams. The views were magnificent and it was so much better, going with someone who knew the area well. In the evenings we ate at the local pub and then back to our cosy cottage to watch TV in bed! Truly the best holiday we've ever had." Pam & Joanne

Northern Hospitality

"My two sons, aged 12 and 10, their aged ponies, my aged ex-racehorse, 2 terrriers and a lurcher make an annual trip from Newmarket to Scotland. This year we camped on the way up just outside Hexham with a farming family called the Gibsons at Steel whose details we had got from the UK Chasers handbook. They did everything possible to make our stay wonderful - we had only hoped for a field for the horses for the night, a parking space for the lorry and somewhere different to ride: their hospitality was overwhelming - we were made to feel one of the family and wined and dined and then escorted by riders up to the Fells which were beautiful. The next day Mrs Gibson telephoned a friend, Mrs Lawson, who farmed on Hadrians Wall and we arrived at their farm to find her and her grand daughter tacked up and waiting to ride with us up to Hadrians Wall - another amazing ride. I would recommend anyone to go on holiday in Northumberland and support these farming communities." Mary Maitland
